At What Age Does A Child Experience Their First Spinal Trauma?

At a recent seminar taught by Dr. Claudia Anrig of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, we learned about when the first trauma might occur to a child. It wasn’t surprising to hear that research suggests micro and macro trauma can be detected as early as the fetus within the uterus.

Did you know that the fetus develops seven times more quickly than an infant? This is why a fetus is even more susceptible to spinal trauma through external biomechanical forces that will affect the molding of the musculoskeletal system in the uterus.

When might this occur during pregnancy? If the baby has not moved into the vertex (head down) position by the seventh month, Intra-Uterine Constraint can occur leading to bone, cartilage, muscle and ligament deformity of the fetus. There are four fetal positions that cause biomechanical forces leading to spinal alterations and they are breech, face, brow and transverse lie presentation.

What can a pregnant woman do to support healthy development of the baby? Dr. Anrig says, “Conservative Chiropractic spinal care during pregnancy may prevent or decrease the possible occurrence of Intra-Uterine Constraint and its associated birth risks to the fetus.” Dr. Claudia Anrig.

In our office, we have experienced that chiropractic care has not only decreased Intra-Uterine Constraint but also has kept mom at ease as the baby grows and decreases pain and length of “labor” and delivery of the baby. We suggest mom and dad keep their spines and nerve systems checked and in optimal health prior to conception and through the pregnancy.

Wholeness: Clarity on this buzzword

Wholeness much like a lot of relatively new words is a buzzword. We see it everywhere, especially in advertisements, marketing events, and large stores. Yet many do not "get it," in my judgement. Below is an education piece on what wholeness is and how chiropractic is all about true wholeness.

Wholeness is from within and the organ which allows wholeness to reside in our being is our Nerve System. The word wholeness is a derivative of being whole and those aspects dealing with our whole being. At Serving Life, we deal with your whole being, physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. As chiropractors, we adjust your nerve system to allow you to be the most connected in your body and your life.

As we adjust your nerve system, we allow your body to heal and regenerate itself through a process call cellular replacement. Every cell, tissue, organ, joint, and muscle in our body regenerates itself through this process. The clarity in our nerve system allows this process to be the most efficient requiring the least amount of time and energy to perform this function. This is how chiropractors support your physical being. Ensuring you are working at your best.

Our mental being is a powerful aspect of our life. Our minds can either work for us or against us in life. Take time right now and think about what you are feeding your being. What are you feeding your mind? What are you telling yourself on a consistent basis? Is this a message of life, growth, and higher vibration or is it of dis-ease, struggle, or lower vibration? We have all heard that thoughts are things and what we think about comes about yet let’s take this to another level: where our concentration goes, energy flows, and manifests in physical form. This means aspects in our life that we think about send energy into our life or body and hence manifests in our life or body. At Serving Life, we help you become accountable for your thoughts and help you use your mind to allow for your dreams to manifest.

Our society does a good job at introducing that our emotional health is crucial for wholeness yet often times the education stops there. At Serving Life, we explain how our nerve system performs one of two functions with every emotional event in our life. Our nerve system either integrates the emotion for positive growth and function or we store the emotion as potential energy. When our emotions are stored consciously or subconsciously they manifest into dis-ease in our body. The chiropractic adjustment allows stored conscious and subconscious emotion to be integrated for positive growth and function.

At Serving Life, we acknowledge the presence and importance of our spiritual being. Life force, which is Spirit, flows through our nerve system and allows life to be produced in our body. On the largest of scales, what the chiropractic adjustment does, is connect you to You. Everything in life starts and stops with how connected we are to ourselves. Our health, relationships, and awareness in life all depend on how connected we are with ourselves.

Is Your Baby Crying...A Lot?

I recently read an article published in Pathways, a family wellness magazine published by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association about "Colic". I felt my jaw drop as I read that the average baby cries 2-3 hours per day! Being 16 weeks pregnant myself, that does make me a bit nervous, yet what about the babies that cry more than this?

In the magazine, they say it's the rule of the 3. If your baby cries more than 3 hours per day, more than 3 days a week for more than 3 weeks and, is otherwise healthy, is considered to be colicky. What does this mean? Well, it means we don't know why your baby is crying so much, yet the article discusses a variety of potential reasons and natural ways to soothe your baby from nutrition to chiropractic care.

My favorite bit of advice in the article: Keep mom relaxed during pregnancy! The author, Jen Allbritton, CN states that the emotional state of the mother can affect the infant and that it is known that stress and high anxiety during pregnancy can increase the risk of infantile colic. Also, several studies have shown that colicky symptoms may be linked to biomechanical dysfunction of the spinal joints affecting the nerve system which may be helped with chiropractic care. One study showed a 67% reduction in daily hours of crying in infants receiving spinal adjustments compared to 38% reduction in infants receiving a placebo medication.

Whether your baby is colicky or not, it's important to ensure your baby is growing and functioning at their best. Get your baby's nerve and spinal system checked today!
